History

Providence Baptist Church and St. John Baptist Church officially merged on Oct 14, 2005 to become Providence St. John Baptist church. Both of these churches combined have over almost 200 years of history, serving as thriving worship centers in their respective communities. Under the leadership of Rev. Phillip L. Pointer Sr. and  Rev. Carey E. Pointer Sr. Providence St. John has become a church of impact.  

 

St. John Baptist Church History Timeline

• 1925 – “St. John Mission” founded as a house to house song and prayer service.
• 1926 – “St. John Mission” becomes “St. John Baptist Church”.
• 1934 – Services are held in the 900 block of N. Alfred St, Reverend J.G. West serves as Pastor.
• 1948 – SJBC Church building constructed on the corner of N. Alfred and Montgomery Streets. 
• 1965 – After 30 years of service Reverend J.G. West was summoned home to rest. 
• 1963 – Reverend J.W. Johnson becomes assistant pastor of SJBC.
• 1965 – Reverend J.W. Johnson becomes pastor of SJBC.
• 2000 – Rev. J.W. Johnson relinquished his position as pastor after 35 years of faithful service.
• 2002 – Rev. Phillip L. Pointer becomes pastor of St. John Baptist
• 2005 – Merged with Providence Baptist Church

 

Providence Baptist Church History Timeline 

• 1891- Thirty people met at Friends of Zion Hill in the desire of organizing a new church.
• 1892- Rev. J.T. Clark took charge as pastor.
• 1914- A building was purchased on M Street for $10,000.
• 1931- Rev. George W. Coleman was elected pastor.
• 1938 - Rev. G. Ellington Stevenson became the pastor of the church.
• 1943 - The church building was burned down.  The church was rebuilt.
• 1957- The church moved its location to 526 15th Street, S.E., Washington D.C.
• 1974 - Rev. Stevenson retired. Rev. Carey E. Pointer, Sr. became the pastor of the church.
• 2003 - The church was moved to new location in Upper Marlboro Maryland.
• 2005 - Merged with St. John Baptist Church
